Turnaround Thoughts

Lifestyle – really?

In response to the daily prompt: Lifestyle I am so tired of hearing, “It’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle,” I call bullshit. Used in this way, “Lifestyle” equates to nothing more than a synonym for diet. A buzzword used to pull you in and take your money. Be yourself. Be happy. Eat cake (occasionally), and take walk once in a while. Live in Peace, Spitehot.

I would be Merida.

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “A Storybook Day.” I do not see myself as living a fairytale life. I am grateful for all I have, don’t get me wrong, but I am simply ordinary – 99% of the time it is a good thing. I make enough money to pay my bills-yay! I can’t take vacations every year, but despite what “they” want us to believe, most people don’t – I am very lucky, but… …If I could live one day as a fictional character it would be Merida of Disney’s movie, Brave. I would show the world how traditions can blend with new ideas to create real progress in the world as a whole. I would have fun, friends, family and love.

Take me to the Moon

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Take Me to the Moon.” The moon affects all of the fluids on planet earth.  The ebb and flow of the oceans, female menstrual cycles and even the psyche of humans is inexplicably tied to that silver rock that hangs so unassumingly in the night sky. The moon represents different things for different people: For many the moon represents a feminine and peaceful entity. For law enforcement the full moon can mean more car accidents and drunk drivers. For doctors the full moon brings with it more births and more patients. For farmers the full moon is tied to hard winter frosts. For dreamers the full moon represents freedom from the constraints of the material world. I am a dreamer. When I need a break from the material world, a break from the egos of the workplace, a break from the needs of everyone else, a break from the sound of the traffic passing on the street, I envision myself on the moon – far above the earth. …

Getting Firm – Lessons from my Workout Video Collection

Getting SpiteHot is going to require some movement – movement of not only attitudes and perceptions, but downright physical movement. The big headlines over the past few days have been about the newest study that has found, yet again, that those of us with sit down desk jobs are not doing so well. I sit at a desk 8 hours a day. Check out these numbers from http://www.medicalbillingandcoding.org that I found at http://www.diygenius.com: Basically, the verdict is that movement is necessary to be healthy and sitting can be downright deadly. It is time to MOVE! Being on a budget I decided to take inventory of my current supply of workout videos and DVD’s. A little less extensive than my book collection, I have a couple of video sets and about 5 random workout DVD’s. This doesn’t surprise me because it’s easier to read a book than jump up and down. Thinking SpiteHot SpiteHot means to get healthy and use my past experiences to catapult me forward, so I took a trip down memory lane and …

Learning from the Past

From all my years of reading and trying out different diet plans three stand out as the most effective: Low Carb Weight Watchers Gluten Free Low Carb Low carb dieting worked amazingly fast and I was able to stick with it for several years. I followed the plan explicitly for the first month and lost 26 pounds by the end of those four weeks. This was instant gratification as far as weight loss which was a huge plus, and it had the benefit of increased and sustained energy. Weight Watchers I paid for this one, literally, but only for a short time and it did work fairly well. Almost as fast as low carb, I lost about 10 pounds in a month. The only problem was that I didn’t like paying; so that was the end of that. I am pretty frugal. Gluten Free I spent about nine months going gluten free about 80% of the time. At the end of the nine months I lost about 15 pounds. It was relatively painless, i.e. no …

Diets, diets, diets…

I recently took stock of all of the diet books I currently have in my possession. I’ve discovered 14; actually 15 if you include the one I have that describes what has been done, biologically, to the wheat plants in the United States over the past 40 years. I have books on Paleolithic diets, low carb diets, Mediterranean and South Beach diets, two (2) that describe the evils of sugar and one book by Denise Austin – I’ve always thought she has the best job in the world! In the parking lot of my grocery store there is a book donation box and I seriously considered just dropping them all in; after all, I’ve been in possession of all this information and I am still 40 pounds overweight! That; however, would not be the SpiteHot way of being. Thinking SpiteHot…  SpiteHot means to get healthy in spite of the outside influences that may hold you back. Let’s consider for the purposes of getting SpiteHot that the conflicting messages sent by the diet “industry” are the …

SpiteHot. What does it mean?

Trying to get motivated to get healthy has been pretty hard this time around. My daughter mentioned to me the term “SpiteHot”. Now, I’ve never been one to take pleasure in someone else’s pain. In fact, in my opinion, it’s probably the surest way to get on the bad side of your maker. To me getting SpiteHot is not about others. It is about ignoring others and doing great things for yourself in spite of what others may have said or done. SpiteHot is all about YOU. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt Spitehot, in the context of this blog, is the epitome of self confidence, self assurance and self esteem. It is about getting to know who you are, setting goals, achieving those goals and forgiving yourself when you don’t. So, now what? Now, instead of dwelling on past events, I am going to use them as a catalyst to make myself a better person, body and soul. This blog will be filled with great ideas, I hope, …
